Digital foot capture provides a precise way to bring the plantar surface into the orthotic-design process. The system measures what is presented, while the provider determines how the foot should be positioned, how much load should be used, and whether the result supports the intended design.

That is why provider technique remains essential. The quality of the scan depends not only on the technology, but also on the decisions made before, during, and immediately after capture.

The Capture Begins With the Assessment

A useful scan starts before the foot reaches the scanning surface.

The provider first reviews the foot, footwear, activity, and purpose of the orthotic. In a clinical setting, the prescription, relevant history, range of motion, weight-bearing presentation, and gait findings may provide further direction. Together, this information helps determine the position and amount of load that should be used during capture.

Without that context, the scan may be technically accurate but still fail to represent the foundation needed for the finished orthotic.

Position and Loading Shape the Record

The position of the foot and the amount of load applied affect the contour recorded during capture.

Under greater load, the foot and surrounding soft tissue may spread. With less load, the provider has more opportunity to guide a flexible foot toward the position selected for the orthotic. Neither approach is automatically right for every person.

The relationship between the rearfoot and forefoot also affects the result. A shift during scanning may change the arch, heel, or forefoot position that appears in the file. During full weight-bearing capture, the position of the upper body may also influence how the foot loads beneath it.

Choosing the position deliberately helps ensure the recorded shape reflects the provider’s intent.

Each Capture Method Requires Technique

Digital foot capture may begin with direct contact measurement, a foam impression that is later digitized, or a mobile scan. Each method follows a different process, but all depend on how consistently the foot is presented.

With direct contact scanning, the provider controls the foot while the plantar surface is measured. With foam, the foot must enter the impression without shifting or distorting the shape. With mobile capture, alignment, camera movement, and the quality of the completed scan still need to be checked before the record moves forward.

The technology may change, but the provider still determines whether the captured position is appropriate for the orthotic being designed.

Review the Scan While the Person Is Present

One of the strongest advantages of digital capture is the ability to review the scan immediately.

The provider can compare the right and left feet with the physical assessment and look for a position or contour that does not make sense. An unexpected forefoot position, exaggerated arch, uneven heel, or large difference between similar-looking feet may indicate that another scan is needed.

The question is not simply whether the software created a complete image. The provider must decide whether the image accurately represents the foot and the intended design.

Repeating the scan at this stage is much easier than trying to compensate for an unintended position later in the workflow.

The Scan Becomes the Foundation for Design

In Correct and Confirm, Amfit’s orthotic-design software, the scan becomes the starting point for the orthotic.

The provider reviews the plantar surface and develops the design around the prescription, recommendations, footwear, and intended result. The arch, heel cup, posting, thickness, accommodations, and reliefs can then be adjusted before milling.

A well-positioned scan gives the provider a more reliable foundation for those design decisions. It also makes it easier to understand which features came from the foot and which were intentionally added during design.
